What I believe matters in a career is how we transform the events we face into the useful wisdom of experience. A good deal of my career has been leading the growth of the integrated marketing communications firm Merrick Towle Communications from a staff of 15 to over 80. However, the word I believe best encapsulates my experience is Change, which I break down into two parts: implementing proactive, intentional change to achieve specific, positive results; and managing the influences and impacts change has on an organization to produce the best possible outcomes.

Below is a brief summary of accomplishments during my 25+ years at MTC:

  • as Partner

    Set strategic vision for agency including structure, deliverables, and opportunities to be pursued. Envision, recruit, mentor, and lead senior management team. Direct the articulation of company strengths, values, and point-of-view. Expand business development efforts. Develop leadership transition plan to perpetuate agency upon retirement of principals.

  • as COO

    Direct senior management team, providing consultative oversight of all departments. Develop and implement agency-wide systems including personnel recruiting and development; workflow; and company self-promotion. Create, expand, and adjust systems to accommodate staff growth from 15 to over 80, and back down to 35. Adopt open-book management system including company-wide financial performance reporting.

  • as CFO

    Develop and implement company accounting and financial reporting systems. Locate, acquire, and build out office space, both leased and purchased. Manage banking relationships including negotiating mortgages, line-of-credit, and equipment financing. Manage CPA relationship to accomplish tax return preparation and provide reviewed financial statements. Identify and oversee third-party resources to perform payroll, 401(k), and other activities. Oversee all accounting functions for agency generating in excess of $60 million capitalized billings.
